Real-Life Tale of Penguin’s Yearly Visit to the Person Who Rescued It from an Oil Spill Turned into a Movie (GNL3)

My Penguin Friend, released to an enthusiastic movie audience, narrates the tale of a man and his enduring friendship with a Magellanic penguin.

Prior to appearing on the big screen, the story originated in the news in Brazil, where João Pereira de Souza, a retired stonemason, found an oil-covered penguin on Proveta Beach in Rio de Janeiro state.

Bringing the penguin back to his house, João discovered that the bird was tired and weakened after swimming through the oil spill. He cared for the penguin, using soap and fish, and named it ‘Dindim’ after his son’s attempt to say ‘pinguin’ in Portuguese.

Once Dindim regained his strength, João set him free on an island close to Proveta Beach and returned home. To his surprise, Dindim had managed to follow him and was waiting on his front yard to be allowed in.

In February of 2012, he ultimately departed voluntarily. The annual visit that followed the fishing season lasted for years, with penguins staying at sea for months to eat large quantities of fish. Dindim chose to return to Proveta to visit João instead of going to a beautiful summer island with his family.

For eight years, he would depart in February and come back in June consistently.

At certain points in My Penguin Friend, Brazilian filmmaker David Schurmann enhanced the narrative by adding elements that extended beyond the actual events of the story. Watch the video preview down below…

Kate Erbland at the Indie Wire describes it as delightful, vibrant, and sure to captivate children’s curiosity about the natural world. Even better if it involves conducting additional research to uncover the truth about João and Dindim’s story.

Schurmann informed the Guardian that he had to convey to cinema legend Jean Reno that the penguin was more crucial than him in the film; Reno acknowledged and was very respectful.

He attempted to subtly incorporate an environmental perspective as he aimed for the film to mainly provide viewers with a sense of comfort and optimism in the challenging world. But the oil spill was what initiated the narrative, and Schurmann, as the head of the Voice of the Oceans Institute, a group dedicated to fighting marine pollution, believed it deserved attention.

I know my love for penguins would make it impossible not to help a friend in need. I once helped a sheep that had got trapped in the mud while working on a farm in Australia, I think it’s just natural to help something that is struggling , don’t you think? Do you have any uplifting stories involving animals or even other examples of good deeds that you have done in your life? I look forward to reading them in the comment section below.
