Start-up takes innovative approach to using fallen leaves (GNL7)

In the time it takes to say ‘deforestation’, another chunk of forest the size of a football pitch is destroyedWWF

We likely give very little thought to the fallen leaves in Autumn that clog up our gutters or the ones that we have to tread over cautiously to avoid slipping, other than the inconvenience that they may cause us. Ukrainian startup Releaf Paper has, however, come up with an innovative idea for dealing with them. Opting rather to use dried leaves from the city to turn them into paper that can be used in the manufactiring of a number of products including paper bags, and office materials.

Unlocking the potential of leaves

Releaf Paper adheres to sustainability in all aspects of production, including resource conservation, processing technology, and raw material usage. Because of all of this, their products are environmentally friendly, even in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, they reduce deforestation by meeting the increased need for paper packaging by using green waste fibers. This in turn contributes to their solution’s added benefits.

But why, on a large scale, hasn’t humanity begun to use fallen leaves as raw materials for the industry?

The gathering and transportation of raw materials is the first reason. The consistency of supply and the material’s purity make up the second justification. The technology used in pulp manufacture is the third justification. The cost of making such pulp will be quite high, and the quality will be subpar, if you utilize the standard wood technique.

Releaf Paper was the first in the world to figure out how to tackle all three issues and transform them into opportunities.

“Tens of thousands of leaves are produced annually in European towns, and municipal agencies set up a whole infrastructure to collect them. They transport the leaves they gather to our processing facilities, which are near the partner cities. We obtain an enormous quantity of raw materials for our manufacture in this method.”

Using industrial equipment, leaves are cleaned to remove foreign materials by washing and drying, while the issues of year-round storage and seasonality are addressed by further granulating and storing the raw material in large bags.

And lastly, employing their own special technology fiber products are produced, requiring less water and chemicals to achieve this superior end product.

The sky’s the limit

The idea really seems to have taken off, with the company among the 18 finalists for the LVMH innovation award 2023 – check out the list here if you want to read about more innovative ideas: https://www.lvmh.com/en/news-lvmh/meet-the-18-finalists-of-the-2023-lvmh-innovation-award. Releaf Paper has been nominated for a hosts of other awards too, partnering along the way with WWF, Google, and USAID, to name but a few. Founded in Ukraine in 2021, this dynamic startup has rapidly created an international presence, and with global ambitions, the sky may indeed be the limit.
